John the Baptist’s birth is a preparation for Jesus’ birth in the Gospel of Luke. In the Gospel of Matthew this pattern comes full circle as the death of John the Baptist anticipates the death of Jesus and parallels it in a number of ways. Both John and Jesus are executed at the order of a ruler: John by Herod the Tetrarch and Jesus by Pilate.
