The New Testament introduces us to a measure of liberty with respect to particular laws in the Old Covenant, including both circumcision and Sabbath observance. However, there is a spiritual dimension to each sign that is grounded in Old Covenant teaching and still essential to New Covenant living. Read the following passages and write a brief summary of what is binding on Christians today.

  1. “Circumcision of the heart” (Romans 2:25-29 in light of Deuteronomy 10:16; 30:6; Jeremiah 4:4)
  1. “Sabbath rest” (Hebrews 3:7–4:11 in light of what you know so far about the Sabbath in Genesis 2:3 and Exodus 20:8-11)
  1. It is not uncommon for people who have a deeply emotional experience with God, say at a retreat, to struggle in the wake of that encounter. Have you had such an experience? Why do you think you might struggle more with idols after a dramatic experience with God?
