Now that God’s laws have been put back in the context of a formal relationship with our heavenly King, how do you feel about the term “obedience”? We hope that you are encouraged to see the value and importance of rules. Obedience is not a vestige of a bygone covenant. Jesus defined discipleship in terms of obedience and said that His true mothers and brothers were those who hear God’s Word and do it. Yes, it’s about a relationship, and yes, the rules are for our own good. But they are divine regulations for a community that would be a light to the world. Let’s accept the challenge of obedience as the way to be that light.
