Israel’s struggle with worshiping other gods and offering improper offerings and tithes is ongoing throughout the Pentateuch. The people need continual reminders that offerings to God need to be handled in a very particular way. The uniqueness of these offerings reinforces the uniqueness of YHWH and His relationship with His people. Nothing about this relationship is to be confused with neighboring peoples or gods.

Israel’s encounter with YHWH needs to remain distinctive, as do the encounters the Israelites have with one another and foreigners in their midst. God commands a very particular sacrificial system to go with His moral code. The sacrificial and ethical systems in Israel are complementary aspects of a single covenantal lifestyle.
