Saving for an emergency can be challenging because most people are not taught to save but spend to get what they want. After all, tomorrow is not promised. Indeed, we are not promised the next day, but if God allows us to see it, an emergency may occur and we have no available funds to cover it. I understand God’s illustration of the ant saving, it is a wise precept.

It is amazing how God repeatedly emphasizes being debt-free. As humans we strive to get what we want and not necessarily what we need, as a result, we end up being in debt most of the time. If we truly stand on God’s word that He will supply all our needs, then debt is not necessary.

I understand now why God wants you to seek counsel from Him and godly human counselors. I was not taught this concept growing up, so over the years, I have made many mistakes. Some of the counsel I received was from ungodly persons and some were biased. I am thankful that through it all God still guided my path because without knowledge I still had faith to trust Him on some level. I understand how challenging it can be to receive counsel from others because we usually want to do things our way.

Every bit of information was interesting and rewarding. I was never taught the principles of saving, giving, and investing.

That I should seek my parents advice on money even if they have not yet found Christ or managed their money well, as a way of showing them honor.

Being a “slave to the lender” looks like a revolving door. You are continuously trying to free yourself but only continue the same pattern. Debt can be enslaving.
-
Owing someone money. This could be for college, cars, home mortgage, etc. When we owe someone money, we no longer have financial freedom to spend how we want because our money is “already spent” since we owe it to the lender.
-
In our country, we used to have loan sharks. People who are in desperate need – sometimes out of gambling or drug addiction – would borrow from them. The interest builds up. When the loan sharks come to pursue payment, the debtor may run away, but the loan shark may threaten the safety of the remaining family members. They may splash pig’s blood on the walls and door. Or they may threaten to lock the front door gate, and then start a fire.

Being in debt to a mortgage company, a bank, or a same day loan company. Having high interest and multi year payoff timelines.

I can be content by enjoying the things God gives me each day that do not cost anything such as good health, happiness and joy, and peace of mind. I can sit in the sunlight and enjoy God’s marvelous works of creation. God does not charge me to give Him praise.

Spend less time window shopping
Thank God for what I do have
Give generously

STOP wanting the desires of this world to keep up with our neighbors. Instead, invest my resources into Godly pursuits of satisfaction. Like expanding my knowledge of the Holy Bible.
-
Find healthy ways to cope and unwind rather than watching tv, scrolling on our phones, or shopping. These things work against us being content by constantly showing us what we don’t have and what we are “missing out on.”
