You are probably familiar with Paul’s epistles, but maybe not as much with other formal letters circulating around the Roman Empire. There were all sorts of formal letters at that time: formal letters of commendation and condemnation, of friendship, of advice and even of blame. 

In this lesson you’ll find on one hand, how formal conventions gave shape to Paul’s messages. On the other hand, you’ll see how much the context into which Paul was writing gave each letter its situational content.
