Paul is personalizing and contextualizing the teachings of Jesus, as well as Old Testament writers before him, for specific audiences at specific moments in time. In this exercise, we’ll try to think like Paul for a moment—with a specific audience in mind.

Read the following passage from the Sermon on the Mount:

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,

    for they will be filled.

Blessed are the merciful,

for they will be shown mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart,

    for they will see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers,

for they will be called children of God.

Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,

for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 5:6-10 (NIV)

  1. Write a brief message to a friend that contextualizes and summarizes, in your own words, the passage above.
