Simply mapping trends in the Bible text can be illuminating. It allows us to step back from individual passages and note larger patterns within chapters or books in the Bible. Take, for example, the appearances of Jesus’ opponents throughout the Gospel of Mark. The above map, developed by Joel Marcus, indicates each place in the Gospel where Jesus encounters opponents to His ministry.

  1. What trends do you notice about Jesus’ opponents in the first half of Mark versus the second half?
  1. How does the shift in opponents relate to developments in the narrative?
