Israel wanted a monarchy so they could “be like the nations around them.” They wanted a tall, warrior king that fit the profile of an ancient leader, who would lead them into battle and make them a conventional power in the ancient Near East. God wanted something better for Israel, but gave them what they insisted on having.

  1. Are there times in your life where you’re more interested in conventional success than breaking new ground with God? Explain below.
  1. In your prayer life, are you looking for God as He wants to be seen, or as a means to getting what you want?
  1. Are you open to His hope for your life when it may be radically different than what you’ve learned to expect?
  1. Think of a hope that you have for yourself that is more important to you than it is to God. Identify this hope and reflect on what it might look like to trade your own expectations for God’s in this part of your life.
