We know that Israel’s request for a king came from a lack of trust and a desire to control their own fate. Finally, God gives them a king “like the nations” but how will that work out? Will Saul be doomed to failure from the start? You might be surprised to learn that God gave him a chance to succeed. He will fail—in some big ways—but not until after the Holy Spirit comes on him and he has some success.
Let’s follow the lines of this tragic story. You’ll learn more about the ups and down in Saul’s story and you’ll grow to appreciate his son Jonathan—what it’s like to be #2, and how to be good with that.
