Do you believe in magic? Most of us will probably say, “no,” but in reality, we sometimes act superstitious and put our hope in “lucky charms.” This is more serious than you might think.

Israel’s journey to kingship shows a lack of faith in their true King. How do we know? For one thing, they put their trust in the ark of the covenant as a form of magical protection. Then they trusted in a human king as a conventional source of protection. The preference for substitutes explains what’s at the heart of God’s judgment on Israel and Saul, but, surprisingly, God will use these misguided efforts to show His own indisputable sovereignty. Let’s see how that happens.
