Israel was looking for the things that are great and noble in the world—conventional sources of power. They were exercising worldly wisdom and setting themselves up to boast in something other than the presence of God. We might keep this verse in mind for the rest of Saul’s story, and the rest of the Old Testament. The fate of the powerful and wise in Samuel will be the same as it will be in Corinth.
