The tribe of Benjamin was central to the tragic events described at the end of Judges when there was no king in Israel. We’ve now seen a king from this tribe provide a very bad beginning to the story of kingship. If Israel wanted protection from the Philistines, then their chosen king—strong and tall—was not the answer. Saul ends up being merely a foil for a successor chosen by the Spirit of God.
