We have compared Hannah with Elizabeth. Now we will place the Prayer of Hannah and the Song of Mary side by side. The following chart shows many connections within the longer prayers.

Prayer of Hannah
(1 Samuel 2:1-10 NASB)
Song of Mary
(Luke 1:46-55 NASB)
Then Hannah prayed and said (2:1).And Mary said …. (1:46).
My heart exults in the LORD (2:1).My soul exalts the Lord (1:46).
Because I rejoice in Your salvation (2:1).And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior (1:47).
Boast no more so very proudly, Do not let arrogance come out of your mouth (2:3).For He has had regard for the humble state of His bondslave (1:48).
There is no one holy like the LORD (2:2).And holy is His name (1:49).
But those who were hungry cease to hunger (2:5).He has filled the hungry with good things (1:53).
Those who contend with the LORD will be shattered (2:10).And sent away the rich empty-handed (1:53).
The bows of the mighty are shattered (2:4).He has done mighty deeds with His arm (1:51).
But the wicked ones are silenced in darkness (2:9).He has scattered those who were proud in the thoughts of their heart (1:51).
He raises the poor from the dust (2:8).And has exalted those who were humble (1:52).
  1. Where else do you see some of these ideas being taught in the Bible: care for the hungry, praise of humility and the humble, warning for the proud?
  1. How have you seen the Church (presently or in history) live out these ideals that reflect the nature of God in the prayer of Hannah and the song of Mary—to care for the weak and poor, to exhibit humility? Record in your workbook examples.
