The opening verses of Joshua 1 recall many themes from Deuteronomy. This brief exercise will highlight some of the many ways Joshua is “Deuteronomic.”

Before Joshua’s story begins in earnest, we are reminded of Israel’s unity and the relationship between Israelite faithfulness and the promises God has made.

Notice the shared wording between each pairing of verses in a few examples below:

Joshua 1:3//Deuteronomy 11:24:
Every place … the sole of your foot ….

Joshua 1:4//Deuteronomy 11:24:
… from the wilderness … the river Euphrates.
