What do you think the main point of Joshua is? Warfare? Conquest? Defeating the Canaanites and occupying their land? We may be in for a surprise here in the second half of the book of Joshua. Joshua is all about establishing a newly ordered creation to replace disorder—a new creation that points, surprisingly, to the theme of rest.
We may have another surprise as well. When the “Conquest” is over, it’s not really over. The land is divided up according to a clear design, but it’s not all taken yet. The ideal doesn’t become the real. Let’s try to make sense of this because, again, there may be some relevant take-aways for us—if we look closely at the details. Let’s do some exploring.
