By the time chapter 8 comes to a close, Achan’s egregious error has been dealt with and Ai has been taken. But in 8:30, the chapter takes a turn. In 8:30–35, Joshua constructs an altar on Mt. Ebal so Israel can worship there. It may seem like a random occurrence, but it’s intentional. Let’s check out the scene.

Read Joshua 8:30–35 and answer the following questions:

  1. Why did Joshua construct the altar?
  1. The altar was made of what type of stone, and why might that have been important?
  1. What happened during the ceremony?
  1. Who was present at the ceremony (be specific)?
