Boasting was generally frowned upon in Greco-Roman culture and considered insulting to one’s audience. The Greek rhetorician and historian Dionysius of Halicarnassus, who lived in the century before Paul, called boasting “the most vulgar and invidious of tasks.” While this sentiment was common in that culture, there were specific times and places where it was considered acceptable.
