Paul is making it clear that he and his companions are the “blessed” from Jesus’ sermon; they are living out kingdom values. While they are beaten and suffer hunger, they are temples of the Spirit of God; while they mourn, they’re comforted; and although they have nothing, they have “everything”; “theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

This is a powerful message, especially to a community that has been reluctant to accept Paul’s ministry, as we heard in the passage below:

We have spoken freely to you, Corinthians, and opened wide our hearts to you. We are not withholding our affection from you, but you are withholding yours from us. As a fair exchange—I speak as to my children—open wide your hearts also.
2 Corinthians 6:11-13 NIV

By linking his ministry with the beatitudes Paul is saying, in effect, “You should know that we are apostles and examples of the Sermon on the Mount. If you know the words of Jesus, you should know us too.”
