For followers of Christ, suffering in the present comes with precious promises for the future.

  1. Read 2 Corinthians 4:16–5:10. Distinguish between those parts of believers’ experiences that reflect their present situation, and those that reflect the promise of the future fulfillment of their life in Christ.

[NOTE: If you are logged into YouVersion, you can simply highlight the reference to the present situation in one color and future fulfillment in another color.]

In the table below, you’ll see some examples of our present situation versus future fulfillment in 2 Corinthians 4:16–5:10.

Present

Future

Outwardly we are wasting away. (4:16)

Inwardly we are being renewed day by day. (4:16)

The earthly tent we live in is destroyed. (5:1)

We have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven. (5:1)

We groan and are burdened. (5:4)

We have the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. (5:5)

What is seen (4:18)

What is unseen (4:18)
