Paul gives very specific messages to audiences who need correction in different ways. Two prominent groups we find are those prone to legalism (e.g., Galatians) and those prone to license (e.g., Corinthians). Therefore, it can be important to ask questions like this: “Who is this message for—those likely to abuse legalism or abuse license?”

  1. In the table you’ll find a variety of examples of messages for audiences that need to be corrected from a tendency to either legalism or license. In the right-hand column insert either “Legalism” or “License.”
Paul’s message:Legalism or License?
Don’t be joined to prostitutes.
You’re free to eat all food.
You are a servant to all.
Don’t cause others to stumble by what you eat.
Idols are nothing.
Idols are demonic.
