Galatians provided a great way to get acquainted with Paul’s letter writing and to begin organizing our journey back through the book of Acts. You can see how this letter fits with the tensions the early church was working out in the Jerusalem Council. You can now imagine how difficult it was for some Jews to envision a new covenant that oriented itself to the Torah with the Holy Spirit, now the principle source of new life and righteousness.
Like Luke in Acts, we’re finding Paul to be a Hellenized Jew. He’s writing to Jews and Greeks, with the conventions of Roman rhetoric in full force. The Old Testament is always close to the surface for those who knew it, but the container of the letter was something everyone could understand.
