It’s easy to overlook the fact that YHWH led the Israelites into this difficult geographical and political situation. In Exodus, God brought the Israelites into the desert and then into a land whose location was always going to be problematic. In the Gospels, we’ll see something similar as the Holy Spirit leads Jesus into the wilderness for a time of temptation and suffering.

In all these stories, it’s clear that God is less interested in keeping us out of difficult times and places than placing us in situations where we need to trust Him.

  1. Recall a time in your life when you felt led by God to a personal “desert” or “wilderness.” What did it feel like to be taken into discomfort and even pain by your God?
  1. What did you learn there?
  1. How might our study of Judges affect the way you process that experience and understand your relationship to God in difficult times?
