Now it’s time to get to know a few judges better. If we knew more about them, would we respect them more or less? Well, it depends on which ones! Deborah and Gideon will be pretty impressive. Jephthah and Samson, not so much. The one thing that seems predictable about them all is that they were unlikely choices. The more we know about their backgrounds, the more striking it is.

And it’s really worth asking yourself why this is so. Why should the weak, the least, the fearful and the young be on God’s list of likely leaders? Don’t let go of that question during this lesson. It can lead to a big insight that explains a lot in the Bible.
