If the second part of Judges featured the lives of heroes who were unlikely—and often unfaithful—we’re about to get a refreshing exception. How about someone who is unlikely and faithful? How unlikely is Ruth to be the center of attention in the Bible? For starters: gender, ethnicity and social status. Her best hopes would normally be just survival. But in this surprising reversal of fortunes, she’ll not only gain a faithful life-companion, she’s going to be the source of security for her Jewish mother-in-law. And she’ll bring a child into Bethlehem whose seed will be the king of Israel.

Let’s find out how all of this happened “during the days of the Judges.”
