The monarchy that began in Israel with Saul in the book of 1 Samuel ends with the reign of the Southern King Zedekiah in early sixth century BC. The monarchy in the Northern Kingdom, Israel, ended with King Hoshea over a hundred years earlier when the Assyrians conquered that kingdom. Judah outlasted Israel in this respect, but its monarchy met a similar fate.
