While Matthew and Luke frame their genealogies with different audiences in mind, John frames Jesus’ heritage around the question of Jesus’ divinity. Matthew and Luke present Jesus’ human lineage, but John makes it clear at the outset that Jesus’ human origins are not His primary origin. Jesus was born, but He didn’t enter life like the rest of us: “In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind” (John 1:4).
