It’s unlikely that saying “I am” in English will cause any commotion. But for Jesus’ listeners, He used a phrase that was the unique name of Israel’s God. “I am who I am” was the covenant name for their divine deliverer. And Jesus uses it repeatedly throughout John’s Gospel to identify Himself with God and with Israel. Let’s track with each instance where He uses these terms and watch the reactions of those who realize what He’s claiming.

When you grasp what Jesus was claiming about Himself, it’s not surprising in the slightest what He’s accused of in the end.
