References to “fulfillment” of Scripture become more common toward the end of the book. Three times it occurs in chapter 19 in the story of Jesus’ Passion. In chapter 15 it would also seem to foreshadow this event: “But the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: ‘They hated me without a cause’” (15:25, ESV). Clearly John makes a special effort to reinforce the prophetic background to Jesus’ suffering and death.

Navigate through these passages from the previous exercise before answering the questions below:

  • John 2:17
  • John 6:31; 45
  • John 7:38; 42
  • John 10:34
  • John 12:14; 38-39
  • John 13:18
  • John 15:25
  • John 17:12
  • John 19:24; 28; 36-37
  1. What trend do you notice in John’s reference to “fulfilling” the Old Testament prophecy? How might you explain this?
