In the opening chapters of Numbers there are two Levitical censuses, in chapters 3 and 4. The first census is found in 3:14-39 and the second in 4:1-49. They may seem redundant at a glance, but there are significant differences between them. 

  1. Read the first few verses of each: 3:14-16 and 4:1-4. What difference surfaces here at the outset of each census? 

There may be multiple reasons for the retirement age in chapter 4, but the likeliest reason is simply that being a Levite was a lot of work. Much of it was demanding physical labor, and although the Levites listed here didn’t have to dismantle the Tabernacle, they did have to carry it between encampments.
