Rebellion comes from all directions in Numbers. In chapters 16-18, tensions arise around the clergy. The special role of Aaron is challenged by leaders from various tribes. Judgment on them is followed by the miraculous budding of Aaron’s rod to vindicate his family line. The differences between Aaronic priests and Levites is then more fully explained.
