It seems like, no matter where we are in the Bible, every new project starts in faith but ends in failure. Numbers won’t be an exception. We were ready to leave Mt. Sinai, full of faith and courage, but it doesn’t last. Our ancestors will want to go back to Egypt, they won’t want to follow Moses, and even Moses himself—this paragon of faith and great leader of God’s people—will suffer a very public failure. 

How is that possible? After so many signs and wonders, how could the Israelites suffer so much doubt? Why do God’s people wander away so quickly? 

But are we really so different? Do we not see extraordinary faithfulness and blessing in our own lives, and still fall quickly to grumbling and wandering? Is there anything we might learn about ourselves as we reflect on their choices?
