Read Hebrews 4:1-13. Notice how the writer of Hebrews associates entering the Promised Land with entering a “Sabbath rest.”

  1. What was required of the Israelites for entering that rest? Or to put it another way, what hindered them from entering their Sabbath rest?
  1. Based on what you’ve learned from the book of Joshua, what did Joshua do to lead the Israelites in overcoming obstacles hindering them from entering their rest?

The writer of Hebrews engages Psalm 95:7-8 to make his points, arguing that the call for obedience is a prophetic call to believe God. Thus, rest from Israel’s Canaanite adversaries foreshadows a spiritual rest offered by Christ. Now read Matthew 11:28-30.

  1. In your workbook, offer at least two thoughts about what it means to enter into “rest” through Christ.
