The story of Jephthah and his daughter is a tragic reminder that making vows isn’t always a good thing. God didn’t ask for this sacrifice, nor did He condone it.

  1. Have you experienced times when you made commitments and vows to God that He never prompted you to make? When you were trying to give Him things He never asked for—perhaps to make a deal with God?
  1. Recall at least one time in your life where your ambition or hopes led you to make sacrifices that God never asked of you. What did you offer and what led you to do this?
  1. Reflect on this offering in the context of Jephthah’s story.
