It will be sad to leave Ruth behind, won’t it? What a sharp contrast from the scandals and anarchy at the end of Judges! Two good people who choose to do the right thing during hard times—and God blesses them—and Israel—in a big way.

As it turns out, we really won’t be leaving Ruth behind. She’ll be in the genealogy of David and Jesus. And she’ll be among the many Gentiles—like Rahab—who prove that believing in the God of Israel doesn’t require you to be Hebrew. She’s a reminder that YHWH is the God of all people. Next, we’ll meet another grieving woman in 1 Samuel who will also make a unique contribution to the story of David’s kingship.
