With the death of Saul and Jonathan, a path opens for David to return to Israel and accept the crown. In many ways it leads to a “happily-ever-after” ending but, unfortunately, David’s reign is not an unmixed blessing. Yes, he won wars, achieved national security, extended the boundaries to finally achieve control over the promised land. But he also fell prey to the temptations that come with power.

We’ll have a chance in this lesson to look more closely at David’s reign and how some of his own choices undermined it. While the last lesson gave us a case study in calling, this one will be more of a case study in leadership. Will David turn out to be another tragic figure like Saul? Let’s take a look and find out.
