Even people who know little about Jesus know some of his sayings. Some of these have made their way into common speech. Here’s a list of some of the most well-known of the sayings of Jesus we find in the Gospels:

  • The truth will set you free. (John 8:32, NIV)
  • So the last will be first, and the first will be last. (Matt 20:16, NIV)
  • What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? (Mark 8:36, NIV)
  • With God all things are possible. (Matt 19:26)

While perhaps less prevalent in popular culture, the following words of Jesus address his purposes and intentions:

  • The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor. (Luke 4:18-19, NIV)
  • Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. (Matt 5:17, NIV)
  • Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. (Matt 10:34, NIV)
  • It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners. (Mark 2:17, NIV)
  • For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost. (Luke 19:10)
  • The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. (John 10:10, NIV)
