While the Old Testament gave us great clues about each of the identities of Christ, the expectations in the first century turned out to be important too, right? Did you know that there were other supposed “messiahs” before and after Jesus? Now you have a better understanding of how unique Jesus was, and yet how expected and how anticipated he was, even for those who didn’t know it right away.

We live 20 centuries later, and it’s easy to forget how difficult it was for early believers to make sense of Jesus as both servant and king, as both priest and prophet, as both sacrifice and temple … and as both God and man!
