The list below gives all the passages with I AM statements in the book of John. They are normally spoken in the context of a sign or a teaching and therefore add further insight into Jesus’ identity:

  • Bread of life: 6:22-59
  • Light of the world: 8:12-30
  • Door of the sheep and the Good Shepherd: 10:1-18
  • The resurrection and the life: 11:17-27
  • The way, the truth and the life: 14:1-7
  • The true vine: 15:1-11

Notice also that these statements not only speak to who Jesus is, they also speak to how Jesus’ identity relates to His people, or those who will become His people.

After reviewing the passages above, record two brief statements for each passage by answering the following two questions:

  1. What do these “I AM” statements tell us about Jesus’ power and authority?
  1. How do these “I AM” statements promise to impact the lives of those who walk faithfully with him?
