In this divine interrogation, there is a subtle chastisement of Elijah. On both occasions, the prophet answers the question with a statement that he is fearful for his life. However, when YHWH responds He does not even address the claims. There is no consolation or encouragement in response to the prophet’s feelings. Rather, He tells Elijah to go back in the direction he came. The Lord needs him to initiate a process that will ultimately realize the downfall of Omri’s dynasty.

Notice that YHWH revealed Himself in a remarkable way to both Moses and Elijah, and then sent both of them back to a rebellious community with specific tasks. We will watch God nurture a personal relationship with His prophets while He uses them as His spokesmen.
