“The cave” is likely “the cliff of the rock” (referred to as the “cleft in the rock” in hymns) where Moses hid from God’s presence as the Lord “passed by” (Ex 33:22; cf 1 Kings 19:11). Elijah was not only going to the mountain of revelation, but he apparently had a personal revelation of God in the very spot where Moses experienced one centuries earlier. These connections reinforce links in the prophetic tradition that will run from Moses, through Elijah and Elisha, on to the writing prophets of the Old Testament and ultimately to Jesus Christ (who meets with Moses and Elijah on a mountain!).
