Read Leviticus 16.

The application of blood to the Tabernacle’s outer and inner altars was an important feature of Israel’s sacrificial system. You may have also noticed a relationship between the gravity of sin and the altar to which blood is applied. As a general rule, involuntary, individual violations were treated at the outer altar. Involuntary, communal violations were treated at the inner altar. Deliberate and unrepented violations were treated with  unique annual sacrifice on the Day of Atonement. This was the only time all year when blood was taken into the Holy of Holies.
